Latest News

has had a busy summer, and three of our films are moving into an even more lively and fruitful fall.

The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith (which we produced for WNYC) continued to engage audiences at film festivals across the country in late Spring and Summer, including the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival (NC), Cleveland International Film Festival, Florida Film Festival, and the Buenos Aires Festival of Independent Cinema International.  In August Jazz Loft was part of the SFJAZZ Summer Season. This San Francisco organization not only screened the film but also presented the pianist Jason Moran playing a live duet with sounds from the film.

We are delighted to announce the theatrical opening of The Jazz Loft later this month. The film will open at the Metrograph Cinema in New York City, 7 Ludlow Street, on Friday, September 23rd.  FilmBuff, the company distributing the film, has announced it will be available on VOD beginning on October 7th, with further releases to be announced soon.

A Road to Home, our film on LGBT homeless youth, has also been a lively presence at festivals across the country in late Spring and Summer: the Newport Beach (CA), Julien Dubuque (Iowa), Boston LGBT, Atlanta LGBT, and Kaleidoscope (AR) festivals. Festivals where we’ll be featured this fall include the Baltimore International Black Film Festival, Toronto Arthouse Film Festival, and the Portsmouth (UK) International Film Festival. The Portsmouth Festival has nominated A Road to Home for three of its four documentary prizes: Best Documentary, Best Editor, and Best Director.
A Road to Home also continues to be requested for screenings by churches, universities, and other organizations. After a spirited screening at the Yeshiva University School of Social Work this summer, we’ve already been invited to screen the film this fall at St. Francis Xavier Church in New York City, Catholic University (DC), Chatham University (PA), and the University of Cincinnati. Screenings around the country have elicited some interesting press, such as these (AfterEllen, Advocate, SFGN). During the summer, we also worked with Third Stage and Blueshift consultants to design simple but powerful educational materials for the film, which we’re now seeking funds to implement.

Lumiere is always pleased when material from our earlier work is licensed and revitalized by inclusion in new work. Two of the Amazon New Yorker documentaries have recently acquired our footage, and we’ve been used in two of Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal episodes.

The best news of all for the fall is that the 1930s and 40s episodes of our documentary history, To Tell the Truth, have been acquired by Turner Classic Entertainment for release on the Turner Classic Movies channel beginning in November. We’ll provide more information on this premiere of To Tell the Truth later this fall.

Advise & Dissent

Available for rent or purchase on multiple online platforms, including iTunes, Amazon, and YouTube, or through the film’s webpage at Watch the film that critics hailed as:

"A fascinating, balanced insider’s look at the stakes and strategies of the confirmation wars.“

Tom Goldstein, SCOTUSblog founder

"Brilliant . . . Every American should see this film.“

Howard Fineman, Newsweek Chief Political Correspondent

With the public once again drawn to the Supreme Court following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, we’d like to draw attention to one of Lumiere Productions’ now extremely timely film, Advise & Dissent, an award-winning feature documentary that for the first time went behind the lines and into the trenches of the Supreme Court confirmation wars. With unprecedented access to senators and lobbyists, the film chronicled the collision of politics and justice in the Roberts, Miers, and Alito battles in 2005-06.
