Two Schools in a Long Island mansion?

A Tale of Two Schools received a sneak preview yesterday at the Greentree Foundation. In an incredible Gilded-Age mansion usually reserved for UN meetings, ERASE Racism screened the 30-minute documentary and recruited support for their new campaign for integration and equity. The screening sparked discussion and plans among the attendees, including leaders of the Long Island Index, the New York State Regent for Long Island, and several students and principals featured in the film.

Schulz goes South

Good Ol’ Charles Schulz will make another big-screen appearance, this time at the Full Frame Festival in Durham, NC. Full Frame only rarely shows films that have been so widely broadcast—so it's a special honor to be included in competition at the nation's "premier documentary festival" (NY Times). The screening is 10:45 a.m., April 6 at the Durham Arts Center. For one Sunday morning, you can watch the comics in a movie theater instead of reading them in the newspaper!

Two new film projects for PBS!

Last fall we introduced comic strips to American Masters with Good Ol’ Charles Schulz.   Now we've signed a development deal to do the same for comic books.  The Dark Knight and The Man of Tomorrow (w.t.) will soar into the Golden Age of Superheroes, when a group of mild-mannered (and under-aged) outsiders launched a never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American imagination.

She couldn't leap tall buildings, but Ann Landers broke taboos, opened minds—and yes, even saved lives.  From a conventional 1950’s debut warning teens about “necking,” her advice column eventually pioneered public discussion of impotence, homosexuality and cancer.  Since You Asked (w.t.), now in development for PBS's National Program Service, will explore the journey, the impact, and (of course) the turbulent personal life of a modern oracle

Kansas to Kandahar to air on PBS in June

Kansas to Kandahar explores the response of the U.S. military in the war on terror by chronicling the service of army reservists called for an extended tour of duty in Afghanistan. Viewers follow the experiences and emotions of a Chinook helicopter unit from suburban Kansas City, serving first in Pakistan - providing humanitarian relief following the devastating 2005 earthquake – and then in the war zone in Afghanistan. Illustrative of the personnel and logistical strains on the American military, the film’s core remains the personal insights and attitudes of citizen soldiers as they fulfill their duties while their families strive for normality on the home front.

Kansas to Kandahar airs nationally as an “America at a Crossroads” Special on PBS on Monday, June 11th at 9 p.m. ET, 8:00 p.m. CT. Check your local listings.

The movement for equal marriage rights is shattering stereotypes about the "commitment-phobic" gay lifestyle. But gays and lesbians looking for true love do face unique hurdles: where to meet, how to woo, what are the rules? Lumiere's latest, Love Lessons, follows three singles as they turn for help to a new breed of professionals—same-sex matchmakers and dating coaches—for help.

The one-hour documentary premieres , with rebroadcasts throughout the week. In the New York area, LOGO is digital cable channel 155. Elsewhere, check local listings.

If you want to dig deeper, a discussion guide is available on Logo's website. LGBT centers in several cities are hosting screening parties.

Produced and directed by Ali Pomeroy and David Van Taylor and edited by Jane Brill, Love Lessons is a Lumiere Production for Logo's hallmark "Real Momentum" documentary series.

Democracy on Deadline on-air, on DVD, and in the news!

Mark your calendar for the broadcast of Democracy on Deadline: The Global Struggle for an Independent Press. The 2-hour documentary will air nationally on PBS's "Independent Lens" on November 21, 2006, at 10:00 pm. As always with PBS, check local local listings; some stations are even running it before the official launch.

Meanwhile, the FBI is now investigating a U.S. Congressman, based on the LA Times exposé our documentary chronicles.

The film will be screened in 25 communities across the U.S. during the months of October and November, 2006, as part of the "Independent Lens" outreach effort.

DVD's of Democracy on Deadline are now available from First Run/Icarus Films.
